Fall-Home-Improvement-Projects-and-Care-CaulkingYour home is the place where you spend most of your time, where you desire to be at the end of the day. When you open the door and feel the warmth and safety of the walls surrounding you. You love the place which you call your home.

Your home does not have to necessarily be your house. It can be any building made of bricks, stone, wood, or concrete. Your home is the place which is filled with your family, friends, coworkers, students, etc. and where you feel loved and most comfortable.

In fact a home can also be very stressful. Keeping your home warm and cozy can often times be very costly. It is very important to perform annual inspection on your home to make sure there are no cracked seals or any areas that can contribute to the warm air escaping and the cold air entering your home.

Here are some areas of concern to look for while performing an inspection to make sure you are nice and warm for years to come.

You will want to inspect anything and everything where air can enter your home. Often times the two biggest points of possible air entry are at the windows and doors. Inspect your windows and check to see if you feel any air coming through. If so, you have a leak in your seal. There is another good way to test the seal of your window but you will need someone to assist you. Take a small flash light and go outside, turn the flash light on and press it against the seal of the window. If the person on the inside can see the light then you have a cracked seal that needs repairs. Be sure to caulk all areas where the light shined through. Even a tiny crack can allow a ton of heat to escape and also allow the cold air to come in. It is important to check the integrity of the wood frame around the window. If it’s cracking, bubbling or chipping, most likely there is some sort of damaged to the frame. Whether it be wood rot or fungus damage you would want to call a licensed wood damage repair specialist company, like Best Rate Repair to take a look at any possible damage and give you an estimate on what it would cost to repair.

Next let’s move onto the doors. This inspection would be somewhat like the windows. Make sure the door is closed and run your hand around the door seal. If you feel any air then you know you have a leak and you will want to seal it by caulking it. Check the Door Sweep. The door sweep is the rubber piece that runs along the bottom of the door. Check to make sure it’s intact all the way across the bottom of the door and that no chunks of rubber are missing from it. Also if the door sweep is old and dried out with cracks through it, you will want to make sure you replace it. The door sweep is what seals the bottom of your door and keeps you safe from the outside elements and helps stop any little critters from entering your home. Next you will want to inspect the threshold plate. This is normally a metal place that is secured to the ground and is used in conjunction with the door sweep, by providing a proper seal under your door. Check the threshold plate to make sure all screws are tightened down and that the door sweep lays snugly against it. Use the flash light method that I talked about before. If you can see the light from one side to the other then you know you do not have a good seal. You will then want to contact a licensed contractor to come out and take a look at it for you. During this inspection ask him or her to take a look at the door frame to check for any leaks and to see if it has any sort of wood rot or fungus damage that would need to be repaired.

You will want to caulk to seal any gaps around your home. Check the holes around the entry and exit points for utility cables. If you can feel air coming in through these gaps you will want to seal them. Also check your electrical outlets, if you notice a slight chill when you go to plug in your smart phone, it is possible that air is flowing through the walls from some sort of vent in your home. Make sure all vent screens are intact and in good working condition. Any large holes in a vent could allow in more air then it was designed to.
Lastly check your roof for potential leaks. If you are missing a shingle or tile, you will want to get it corrected right away because it could lead to a leak, and if not fix right away it could make a simple replacement turn into a very costly job. Hire a licensed roofer to take a look at your roof to make sure it is in good shape and no repairs are needed to the roofing materials.
