Q: I’ve heard that termites cause billions of dollars in damage each year in the United States. I definitely don’t want that happening to my house! Is there a certain time of year when they strike so I can be on the lookout for signs?
A: You’re right, termites cause a significant amount of damage to U.S. homes each year, which adds up to big bucks. According to Termite.com, termites infest over 600,000 homes in the United States each year, costing up to 5 billion dollars annually for termite control and damage repair.
It’s a good idea to always be on the lookout for termites in your home, but spring is typically the season where you’ll see them most. Between March – May, termites are triggered by the warmer temperatures and rainfall to disperse and start new colonies.
During this time, large numbers of winged termites, known as “swarmers”, become active and may invade your home. Once indoors, these termites shed their wings, pair off with a mate and attempt to begin a new colony in your home.
Not a pleasant thought, but it’s not all bad news. Swarmers are incapable of eating wood. They seldom survive and are best removed with a vacuum. However, if they are able to mate, then a colony could easily grow in your home.
