Decks Don’t Last Forever – Deck Safety Month

Spring is in the air, which means it’s time to clean out the grill, re-stain the deck and invite friends, family and neighbors over for some outdoor get-togethers. Before you throw the first steaks on the grill however, ask yourself – Is my deck safe?

May is Deck Safety Month, and now is the time to make sure your deck is sturdy and up for another season of supporting your family and guests safely. Deck safety is a serious issue. According to data collected by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, since 2003, thousands of deck-related injuries have been reported across the United States, including several deaths.

The most dangerous event is deck collapse, which can happen if the deck detaches from the house, or if the support beams buckle. Many different things can cause a deck to collapse, including age, wood rot, termite damage or poor construction.

If you really want to understand what a deck collapse looks like, take a look at the video below. This is a live simulation of a deck collapse performed at the 2010 Deck Expo.
