Reflecting on Veterans Day

Purple Heart

Thank you to those who have served our country.

“To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of nations.” President Woodrow Wilson

World War I officially ended with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles on June 28, 1919. However, the war had already ceased with an armistice agreement that took effect November 11th at 11PM, the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. World War I was originally known as “The Great War” and “The War to End All Wars,” because of the vast destruction it wrought across the European landscape and the millions of lives lost.

Unfortunately, it was not the “War to End All Wars.” From that day to the present, our troops have continued to fight across the global stage. They’ve walked the jungles of Vietnam, sailed the waters off the Korean Coast, and fought in the crags and sands of the Middle East. It was President Eisenhower, a solider himself, who changed “Armistice Day” to “Veterans Day” in 1954 to show appreciation for the soldiers of all wars.

Today, over 19 million veterans live in our country. Each one of these men and women has pledged themselves to the ideals that America stands for. They have shown a willingness to put themselves in harm’s way to protect the interests of our country and preserve the freedom and democracy that we all enjoy.
