One of the best parts of the holidays is that they bring families together to share in meals and exchange gifts.
Halloween is long gone, so there’s no need to horrify any guests that come over for a visit for the holidays. If your house isn’t exactly in tip top shape, take the holidays to do some quick and easy home repairs. Here are five common home repairs to consider:
Add Exterior Lights
We don’t get a lot of snow and ice down here in San Diego, but the mornings and nights do bring frost, which can make walkways slippery. Make your home more inviting and safe for guests by adding outdoor lighting to your front walkway and porch. There are a variety of lighting styles to choose from and a price for every budget. Consider also adding floodlights to your yard to highlight trees or other greenery that you are proud of.
Check All The Doors
Doors are made out of wood, an organic material. Over time, that wood can warp due to heat and moisture. If you have doors in your home that get stuck, it might be time to do easy maintenance to them. Check the locks, knobs and hinges on each of your doors. Add a few drops of lubricant to squeaky hinges or to knobs and locks that don’t move well. Tighten any loose screws around your knobs.
Check Window Sealers
Windows are the most vulnerable areas of the house when it comes to letting in drafts. Even though we rarely get the ice storms here in San Diego, it can still get pretty chilly at night during the winter months. If your windows aren’t tightly fitted into your home, they could be leaking in cold air. Not only will your holiday guests get a chilly reception when they visit, leaking windows could also put your home heating system into overdrive, which will cost you. If you feel cold air seeping through your windows, it may be time to replace them. Dual-pained windows can also help drastically improve your home’s energy efficiency. Speaking of your heater, have you replaced the filter recently?
Check Your Deck
You probably won’t be having a lot of BBQs over the holiday, but that doesn’t mean you should forget about your deck. If you have a wooden deck, it can be susceptible to damage from the weather, termites, wood rot, mold and more. Make sure to carefully assess your deck to make sure the planks, rails and stairs are solid. Check the posts and ledger as well. If you notice debris, give your deck a good clean. You may also want to consider adding a new layer of stain and/or sealant if you haven’t done so in a while. Best-Rate Repair can help you with all of these chores.
Re-caulk the Bathroom
If your previously smooth and pristine caulk is now brown and brittle, it’s time to re-caulk before your mother-in-law has the chance to tsk tsk about it. There’s another reason to re-caulk. Old caulk can attract mildew. Before you send out those invites for a holiday dinner at your place, check the caulk around your sink, tub and shower joints. If it looks old and worn out, then head over to your nearest home improvement store for some new caulk.
If you are not the do-it-yourselfer type or would rather be enjoying a nice mug of eggnog instead of hauling spackle home from the store, give us a call at Best-Rate Repair.
